Holden keys: it depends which Holden

Holden sold four different families of car under the one badge. The key job depends on which family you have, not the year.

Australian-built Commodore, Calais, Statesman and Monaro (VT to VZ, 1997 to 2006). These were built here and use Holden’s own body computer for the immobiliser. Programming is done through the body control module using the car’s security code. A remote key on these is $275. A spare is a normal job. If all keys are lost, we get the security code for the car and program new keys at the vehicle.

VE and VF Commodore and Calais (2006 to 2017). From the VE the chip and the remote are in one flip key, programmed through the diagnostic port with no security code needed. This is the cheapest Commodore to key at $169 for a remote key, and it is the one we are asked about most. The VF kept the keyed ignition on most models and added a push-button smart key on the Calais, SS and Calais V. On the VF we fit genuine Holden keys at around half the dealer price. A spare remote key is $250 and a spare smart key is $250 to $280. All keys lost on a smart-key VF takes longer because the car has to be put into learn mode without a working key.

ZB Commodore (2018 to 2020). This is a rebadged Chevrolet with a smart key. Quoted per car.

Cruze, Barina and Trax (Chevrolet) and Spark and Captiva (Korean), 2006 to 2018. A spare is a clone of the chip plus the remote, programmed through the diagnostic port, $169. The Cruze is the Holden we are asked about more than any other and it is one of the easiest to do. All keys lost on a keyed-ignition Cruze is $300, which makes it one of the cheapest lost-key jobs we do.

Colorado and Rodeo (2003 to 2020). These are Isuzu utes with a Holden badge. The Rodeo and the 2008 to 2012 Colorado use Isuzu’s system. The 2012 onwards Colorado uses a GM system. All of them are keyed ignition. A Colorado remote key spare is $169. The Rodeo has a transponder key with no remote, $169.

Astra, Vectra and Zafira (2004 to 2009) and Astra (2016 to 2020). These are German Opels. The older ones run Opel’s immobiliser, so the key is a different part and the programming is different. That is why an AH Astra key is $200. The 2016 onwards Astra is a newer Opel system and some have a smart key.

Why some Holden keys aren’t priced on this page

The ones marked “call for price” are the ZB Commodore, the smart keys on the late Captiva and Trailblazer, and any car with all keys lost. On these the job depends on the exact car. A ZB is a Chevrolet underneath and takes a different key again. A smart-key Captiva has to be put into learn mode. A lost-key job on a VT to VZ Commodore is done through the body computer rather than the diagnostic port. We would rather give you the right price on the phone than put a figure here that turns out to be wrong.

Lost all your Holden keys?

We can still come to you. What is involved depends on the family. On a Cruze, Barina, Trax or Captiva we cut the blade to code and program new keys through the diagnostic port. On a keyed-ignition Cruze that is $300, one of the cheapest lost-key jobs we do. On a VE or VF Commodore it is much the same, with an extra security step on the smart-key VF. On a VT to VZ Commodore, Statesman or Monaro we work through the body control module with the car’s security code. It takes longer but it is still done at the car. On a Colorado it depends on the generation, Isuzu-based up to 2012 and GM-based after that. We confirm the price with you before we come out.

Do I have to go to a Holden dealer?

No. Holden dealers have closed, and the GM service centres that replaced them do not make keys on the spot. We carry the programming equipment for every Holden family, we come to the car, and the key works the same as the original for locking, unlocking, the boot and starting.

Usually the transponder chip in the key has failed. We can test the key at the car and program a new one if that is the problem. Nothing in the car needs replacing.
